What is TIG Welding
Tungsten inert gas welding or gas tungsten arc welding is a method of creating a weld using a non-consumable tungsten electrode.
During the welding process the person welding will create an arc between the non-consumable electrode and the material they are welding. At the precise position where the arc comes into contact with the material a weld pool forms. During the process the welder is slowly hand feeding a thin wire into the weld pool as it forms.
TIG welding gives the welder more control over the heat being applied to the metal and the amps. This control is established using either a thumb remote or a foot pedal. The resulting welds are perfect for times when a detailed design or a curve is being created
This process is frequently used in airplane construction and maintenance, and by automobile enthusiasts. The welds TIG creates are strong, smooth, they have less splatter than MIG or stick welds, and they are simply more attractive.
This welding process is excellent when you are working with thinner metals, but it does require you to have excellent hand to eye coordination, and steadiness, No fluxes are used during the process so the welds are lower profile and less noticeable.
How to Choose the Best TIG Welding Machine
When you are considering purchasing a TIG welder you want to consider all of the pertinent features that could apply to the welding projects you might perform with the machine. If you ask me which is the best TIG welder on the market? I must say, it totally depends on your purpose. So, at first, you need to identify your purpose to choose the right one.
Some of the newer welding models are three in one machines that combine the abilities of a plasma cutter, a stick welder and a TIG welder. Having three machines in one is excellent for some people, but many people do not need all three machines so they might be better served by a machine with fewer features and a lower price.
Some of the things to consider when you are shopping for TIG welders are:
A high quality arc is crucial in creating arc stability. Some lower priced machines simply do not provide you with adequate arc stability. When the arc is not stable you will get a messy looking weld that might be strong but is aesthetically displeasing.
How is the Torch Cooled
The torch on your MIG welder will either be air cooled or water cooled. Most of the time air cooled torches are just fine, but there are times when you are going to wish you had a water cooled torch.
The water cooled torch has a smaller head than the air cooled torch. This smaller head allows you to get into tighter places to do your work.
The water cooled torch also prevents some of the extreme heat the torch can put off when it is being used to create higher outputs. The water cooled torch stays cooler and often makes the welding job more comfortable to complete.
Foot Pedal or Thumb Control
The foot pedal and the thumb control help you to create and maintain the perfect heat ratio so your welds are more precise and consistent. Both of these heat control methods are efficient, but some people simply have an easier time with one control or the other.
This feature boils down to personal preference. Many machines claim to be foot pedal operated, but when you get home you discover that the foot pedal is sold separately. Read the box carefully to discern which heat control is included with the machine.
The dual voltage welding machines can be plugged into a 110v outlet or into a 220v outlet. For most of these appliances the amperage they put out is lowered when they are used with a 110v electrical current.
This feature does make it possible to use your machine in more places with fewer power supply concerns.
You want a machine that has easy to use controls. Some devices have control knobs and dials that are small and you have to remove your welding gloves to make any adjustments to the machine. Look for a machine that has large, easy to turn knobs and dials.
You also want a machine with easy and quick connectors so you can set up to do your work faster, and the putting away of the machine is made easier.
Most of the things that make one TIG welder better than another are simply personal preference items. Pay close attention to the amperage output the machine is capable of and to the thickness of the metal that it can weld.
How TIG Welding is Different
TIG welding is a unique welding style that gives you the ability to create neater, cleaner, smoother welds on thinner and more delicate materials. It is perfect for hobbyist who want to make decorative and intricate metal artwork, and it is strong enough to be used on airplane and automobile construction.
A lot of people wonder what makes this technique of welding different than the other welding processes.
How is TIG welding different from MIG welding?
MIG welding and TIG welding are basically different because:
- MIG welding is done at a faster pace than TIG welding. In MIG welding the focus is more on quantity of welds you can make and in TIG welding the focus is more on the details of the weld.
- MIG weld requires a feed wire to be used during the process. The feed wire is consistently moved through the gun and it melts to create the weld. The TIG technique uses a rod to create a fusion between the two metal surfaces.
- TIG welding can be performed on a larger variety of metals, but MIG is often the better choice when you are fusing thicker pieces of metal together.
How is TIG welding different from Flux Core welding?
- Flux core welding is better suited to fusing metals that are dirty or maybe metals that have developed rust.
- Flux core welding can be performed on thicker sections of metal than TIG welding. TIG allows for a better control over the amount of heat input that is being used.
- TIG welding creates smoother and neater looking fusions.
How is TIG welding different from stick welding?
- Stick welding is the better choice if you are welding outdoors or in high wind situations.
- Stick welding is better on thicker materials than TIG welding is.
- Stick welding allows you to work with dirtier or rusty materials
Multi-process TIG welder: Does it work
Whenever you consider whether a tool or device is good or bad you have to remember that everything has both positive and negative aspects. You also have to consider that something you think is positive may not appear to be a positive aspect to someone else. With that in mind let’s look at some of the pros and cons of the plasma cutter, TIG welder, stick welder machines.
Positive Aspects of Multi Process TIG Welders
- You can easily switch from one function to the other function and this is highly useful if you are doing something that requires all of these different processes, or any combination of these different processes to be performed.
- They can normally do both Ac and DC so they make spot welding and extensive welding jobs both easy to perform.
- They eliminate the need for you to store three separate machines, or for you to have to carry three machines with you to do a job.
- They usually save you money.
Negative Aspects of Multi Process TIG Welders
- A single function machine may have a greater amount of power than the multi process devices do.
- The three in one machines are normally heavier than some of the small plasma cutters, TIG welders or stick welders.
Plasma Cutting with a three in one machine is just as precise and easy as it is with a dedicated plasma cutter.
TIG welding with a three in one machine is just as easy, precise, and rewarding as it is with a single function plasma cutter.
Stick welding varies. The stick welding can be equally fantastic with a three in one machine as with a dedicated welder, but there are time in heavy construction, pipeline work, and some other fabrication jobs that the dedicated stick welder is more convenient to use.
TIG welding is the most frequently chosen type of welding process when the way the fusion looks matters. If you are designing something that you want to be attractive, and you want the welds to be almost unnoticeable then you want to be using the best TIG welder.
The new three in one, multi-purpose welding machines will allow you to have a choice between the type of welding you want to do, and will give you the ability to cut metal into pieces as well as weld it together.
